Chasing Rainbows
You looked for your rainbow
In the colored lemniscates
Of the petrol puddles
While I searched for mine
In the clouds.
You jigged with the country boys
In the village hall
While I sat alone
Waiting for a foreigner
To ask me to tango.
You settled where you rooted
A mile from your Mam
To a farmer with a few hectares
And a bollixed tractor
While I moved away
Dreaming of perfumed men
With lacquered accents.
You
Made do
Were happy with your lot
At least I thought
While I made believe
Because I couldn’t deal
With the nowness of now
Not when something better
Lay across the ocean.
And you thought I was happy
But you were only blinded
By my glitter.
Maybe neither life
Was better
Just different
Ways of living
