Birdlike
Her papery hands clutch at things
Trying to find hold in this madness.
The more they grip,
The more things slip
From the fingers, onto the tile floor.
Once more, like an angel
Whisper to me what you wish
And then you’re gone with a swish
Of papery wings.
Cups of tea go cold in her hands
As she tries to remember how to drink.
Sweet nectar petals fall from daisies
You love me, you love me not
You drop me in front of that drain
And I concede, emptying myself for your viewing pleasure
Turn on the TV
And See me, among the throngs of nobodies
Dropping to their knees
And praying before this devil of a master.
See me magician
See me conjure it up for you
No magic top hat for me
Only silk scarves pulled slowly from my darkened corner
Brittle bones, soft as seashells
Give way to powder at your touch
Magic dust, breathe me in, hallucinate a healthy girl
And go merrily on your way.
Nothing to see, nothing to mind.
I promise.
Just another Girl.
And so it goes
Sticks and stones can’t break my bones
But words will always hurt me.
Make a beeline for destruction
Accidental trip-and-fall,
Down the rabbit hole she goes,
Another one dead to the world
As we watch Alice shrink-n-grow.
She follows that white rabbit all the way to nowhere,
And they sit
Watching entranced at the steady transition of emotion
HappySadAngryFineAloneSurrounded
Dead…
Curtain falls on our magnificent show.
Did you see how she disappeared? How did she do it?
Wasn’t she Marvelous? Beautiful? Talented?
No.
She was obedient.
